This weekend, "The Farewell" hits theaters every where and it's early reviews have us dropping everything to go see it.
Awkwafina stars in this amazing comedy/drama that is directed by the talented Lulu Wang. Wang wrote this movie based off her own experience with this exact situation she had growing up.
Wang's family learned that her grandmother in China or "Nai Nai", had stage 4 lung cancer and was given three months to live. The diagnosis was kept from Nai Nai, a somewhat common approach to death and dying in China. Wang was six years old living in Florida when this happened to her and went along with it during the time.
When envisioning this movie, Wang wanted it to be about cultural and ethical divides between east and west, parent and child in her Nai Nai's hometown.
Inserted was Awkwafina, who lost her mother at the age of 4 and was raised by her Nai Nai (Grandmother). The script was sent over after she filmed "Ocean's 8" by her manager. When reading the script, she felt the movie was made for her to be apart of due to how much it resonated with her experiences.
The movie has received a 100% rating from Rotten Tomatoes and is above 90% with the audience going into opening weekend. Many have raved about Awkwafina's amazing performance in this film and we can't wait for you all to see it.
